The Seal for the Academy of the New Church dates to 1877, when leaders of the Academy gathered in Philadelphia to design an emblem for the institution. Among its four symbolic quadrants is a temple inscribed with the Latin phrase Nunc Licet — "Now It Is Permitted." The phrase comes from True Christian Religion and describes a magnificent temple bearing those words above its door — signifying that it is now permitted to enter with understanding into the mysteries of faith. Over time, the temple quadrant came to be associated specifically with the College, and Nunc Licet has endured as an emblem of the open pursuit of truth and understanding that defines higher education in the New Church.
